Maxwell Abbott works as Counsel for the Center for Media and Democracy and as a Legal Research Consultant for the Open Society Foundations.
At CMD, he assists with research and advocacy on various topics such as campaign finance law and corporate political activities. With the Open Society Foundations, Maxwell conducts research on human rights and rule of law issues in Southeast Asia.
Previously, he worked as a Legal Project Officer for Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia Community Legal Education Initiative, a non-profit located in Chiang Mai, Thailand which develops the capacity of law schools in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand and was a Communications and Advocacy Associate with Global Health Strategies, a global health consulting firm in New York.
Maxwell is an attorney admitted to the New York State Bar. He received a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from Columbia Law School in 2012 and was awarded the Harlan Fiske Stone Scholarship for Superior Academic Achievement and the Parker School Certificate for Achievement in International and Comparative Law. He received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in political science from the George Washington University in 2008, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
