Defending America, Attacking McCain [1]
Submitted by John Stauber [2] on
The Democratic Party [3]-oriented Campaign to Defend America [4], a non-profit group spun off from Americans Against Escalation in Iraq [5], is behind a TV ad [6] attacking John McCain [7]. Campaign to Defend America and its funders "have pledged a multimillion-dollar effort to target McCain and congressional Republicans on the consequences of the Iraq war [8] on the U.S. economy," receiving "at least $1.4 million from The Fund for America [9], a nonprofit group set up last year by John Podesta [10], a former chief of staff for President Clinton [11]; Anna Burger [12], the secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union [13]; and Rob McKay [14], a California philanthropist (and chair of the Democracy Alliance [15]). Campaign to Defend America [4] is headed by Tom Matzzie [16], the former Washington director of ... MoveOn.org [17]. Among Fund for America donors are multimillionaire financier George Soros [18]." The Center for Investigative Reporting [19] has created a chart [20] illustrating the liberal money and connections behind the Campaign to Defend America. Recently the groups behind the Campaign and AAEI poured $20 million dollars [21] into a the Iraq/Recession Campaign [22] targeting Republicans [23] in 2008.
