We give them subsidies because
we want them to to something. Maybe bring jobs to Oregon instead of Kansas or Texas. Maybe cut emissions with some marginally effective tech that the inventor is lobbying to force on the refining industry. Maybe something that Exxon lobbied for and won, so now to compete they take the same subsidy.
