Saudi Prince, Now Part Owner of Murdoch's News Corp., Influences Fox News

Source: ThinkProgress.org, February 10, 2010

Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin TalalSaudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal (from YouTube)Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal now owns a 7 percent stake in Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., the parent company of Fox News, making him the company's largest shareholder outside of Murdoch's own family. Alwaleed is best known for going to Ground Zero after the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks and personally handing then-mayor Rudolph Giuliani a check for $10 million to help finance relief efforts. Afterwards, Alwaleed released a statement blaming the attacks not on the Saudi airline hijackers, but on U.S. policies in the middle east. As a result, Giuliani returned the prince's donation, gaining him praise from Fox News for doing so. Now that Alwaleed has a controlling ownership in News Corp., he is gaining influence over Fox News. In 2005, just months after Alwaleed acquired his first 5.4 percent stake in News Corp., Fox News covered riots in Paris under a banner saying "Muslim riots." Alwaleed allegedly called Murdoch and had him change the banner to say "Civil riots." Investigative journalist Joseph Trento also reported that a comment he recently made on a Fox Network morning news show, Fox and Friends, about Saudi Arabian money still financing Al Qaeda, was edited out of the show. Trento also reports that Alwaleed "has personally donated huge amounts of money to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers." In a rare interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto in January, AlWaleed explained his personal reasons for seeking influence in American politics: the U.S. buys Saudi Arabia's oil, and the bulk of his country's gross domestic product (GDP) comes from oil. Fox News reliably broadcasts misinformation on clean energy, and aggressively fights efforts to move America away from being dependent on a fossil fuels.

Wow! I wonder how the

Wow! I wonder how the average Fox devotee would feel if they knew?

If they only knew

Yes, and I wonder whether Fox News has covered this story or not?

Anne Landman

I am an avid fox news watcher.

I didn't want to believe this when my friend told me about it. I love watching Glenn Beck. Not sure where to get my news from now.

Glenn Beck??

I'm curious to know what it is about Glenn Beck's performance that you love so much. Is it the buffonery? Or, is it the absurdity of allowing a grown man to act like a total fool on network TV while making believe that he is a political analyst. At least Dr Erwin Corey presented himself as an act rather than a fact.

Disprove Glenn Becks'

Disprove Glenn Becks' position. The Progressive left wishes to destroy our Republic and turn it into another failed Socialist state. Either you can't see the obvious or you approve of the desired fundamental changes they seek. Ignorance is fixable. Stupid is forever.

beck

Dear Bernie:
The idea that the progressive want to turn the country into a socialist state is just ridiculous propaganda. I'm so sorry to hear that you have bought into such lies. Of course, one of the classic propaganda techniques is the power of repetition to turn lies into the truth.
Progressives favor equality of economic opportunity, meaning no discriminating on people on the basis of race, ethnicity, creed, or sex, while the rand paul's of the tea party want to repeal the Civil Rights Act, which implements the 14th Amendment. Equal rights is not socialist; it is part of our American heritage and a command of our Constitution.
And, on environmental protections, progressives favor rules to govern corporate and government production of toxics because without law those "costs" are externalized to ordinary people, who pay the price with their lives through exposure to poisoned water or food or air.
Similarly, on Wall Street regulation, progressives favor tough rules to protect our economy for fraudulent practices like Goldman Sachs betting/hedging against its own clients' investments that it recommended. The idea that the market knows all or solves all problems and needs no regulation has been disproven time and time again, not just with monopolies but in other settings as well.
And, on health care, the idea that ordinary people in this country, the richest country in the world, cannot get medical care to save their lives if the are not rich enough to afford more health insurance should be an outrage to all. If your house is on fire, the fire department doesn't come by and say sorry, only your roof is covered by private insurance so we'll put that out but leave the rest to burn down. But for your mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, daughters and sons that is what happens in America every day with health. If we were not spending such a ridiculous sum on war and the Pentagon, the country could afford to provide these basics to all Americans. If you think Canada is communist for providing health care to its citizens then really I do have a Brooklyn Bridge to sell you because your gullibility appears to know no bounds.
The suggestion that these ideas are socialist just demonstrates how effective demonization techniques are at alienating people from things that in our democracy we would be able to achieve but for corporate manipulation of public policy. Ignorance is fixable--wake up and quit buying the crap that Beck and Rush are selling. Lisa

IDIOT!!!!!!

IDIOT!!!!!!

Idiot?

Wow, what a good counter-argument. So constructed and thorough. I can tell you put a lot of effort into this.

I.D.I.O.T. = Intellectually

I.D.I.O.T. = Intellectually Deficient - Irrationally Opinionated - Totalitarian!

the comment about how it was

the comment about how it was hard to come up with idiot was made a 934 am the comeback acronym with what idiot meant 550 pm...It took you that long to come up with that? (trolls unite!)

Devil's Advocate

Maybe the guy who took approx. 8 hours to reply to your TROLLING remark isn't glued to his computer screen. You don't feel comfortable taking him on "mano a mano" or "tete a tete", you have to call in your tag team (of trolls) to deal with his remark? Where does that leave you! It makes you resemble his initial remark and his retort!

i think i would do a LITTLE

i think i would do a LITTLE more homework than THIS! whose ever heard of this guy before? not everyhing you read is true you know

npr

My grandmother would flip

I don't know if I should bring this up to my grandmother. Her heart may stop...

Also, why is it that it's mostly the elderly that are super super super into Fox News? I don't get it. It's like they find some sort of life sustaining energy through the tears of Glenn Beck. Whatever....

And now I find out that there's a Saudi Prince working with the network? Honestly, I'm not that worried about it. However, how can this jive with their format and audience? Curious.

Because the political

Because the political commentary 24 news hour machine knows it makes money by telling people what they want to hear, not what they need to know.

I read in one of Al Franken's books that the Pew Charitable Trusts ran a survey a few years back, to determine the efficacy of politically slanted 24 Hour News channels. They determined that while people who watched Fox News and/or listened to Rush Limbaugh THOUGHT they were very educated about American politics, it turned out they were the LEAST educated of all people the survey polled.

LOL... I don't know that I

LOL... I don't know that I would take anything as fact from an Al Franken book. A guy who thinks logic is not independent of content?

You're probably just a kid and still in that ego centric stage of development where you think you're smarter than everyone else but if you're objective and want to understand the people and process behind the ideology which you've been told to believe I suggest you look up "The Genesis of Critical Theory" as well as "The Genesis of Political Correctness"

Jill

lol indeed

I don't need to read Al Franken's book or even the research that he cited to know that Fox watchers are the least educated on current issues. The station blatantly misinforms its viewers more than any other network (news or non-news), so logically we can deduce that their knowledge to be less than that of those who watch other stations.

Wow! I do know...and don't

Wow! I do know...and don't care. He has a 7% share, not enough to demand anything. Fox is beating up on the mosque at ground zero and questioning it's funding(apparently from the Saudis) right now. How's that for control?

interesting

Thanks for the post. I forwarded this article to a friend who will find it very interesting. Hopefully he'll be a frequent visitor of your site now. cheers!

Saudi Owns Part of Murdoch New Corp

Why did I think there was a law against a foreign country/person owning a radio or television station/network? This country is on a fast track to becoming foreign owned!

Hate to break it to you, but

Hate to break it to you, but Murdoch is a foreigner. He's Australian. Maybe what you really meant was "non-Anglo?"

Rupert Murdoch was born in

Rupert Murdoch was born in Australia, but now he's a US citizen. Just so you know.

Carefull their heads will

Carefull their heads will explode

Foreign ownership

Murdoch got special treatment to become a citizen so that he could own FOX network n the USA.

The Saudi own part of the FOX's parent company; they just gave 1 million donation to the Repub. Gov's for campaing expenses.

FOX went to court to fight the right to lie to their viewers. They won that case.

If they wanted to be truthful, why would they go to court for the right to lie?

FOX also sponsored tea party rallies.

FOX helped Bush sell his WMD lies. Saudi Arabia wanted the USA to invade Iraq.

See the pieces of the puzzle now?

Shame on you Rupert. What

Shame on you Rupert. What you have done is disgusting IMO. Having a lot of money doesn't justify your behavior. America deserves better.

Howy sez: America deserves better...

Howy,

Do you mean the AMERICA which was stolen from the aboriginal people of this continent?

The America which has for 500 years continued the genocide of Native American "Indians"?

The America that barges into any country they wish and kills anyone who happens to get in their way?

Are you referring to that America or some fantasy America where you are the good guys and everyone else is the bad guys?

Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the post.

Fox has Muslim partial ownership!

I find it hilarious hearing that there is a Muslim partial ownership of Fox...
YOU CAN'T WRITE THIS STUFF..

Fox with their bigoted, slanted ,anti just-about-anything mentality being owned partially owned by a Muslim....PRICELESS!!!

I bookmarked this story so I can send the link to all the hateful racists who frequent the AOL POLITICAL chat rooms, with their "all Muslims are terrorists" approach and yet claim they are "good Christians"...but openly expressing the notion that all Muslims are evil and terrorists and expressing HATE for all religions other than Christian! Reminds me of former students in my home-ec classes who screamed they 'hate broccolli", but admiting they really never, ever
tasted it! Seems to me that most bigots are racists don't read the facts first...they merely just know they HATE all other religions!

bigots? racists?

do you not consider the other 'major' networks slanted in their news and ideas about the government? until i was told by some friends a couple of days ago that FOX has some involvement from a Saudi prince, i was in the dark, as are many people. but that does not make me trust the other networks anymore than i did before. and as far as those of us in this country being intolerant of other religions...how many other countries do you know that cater to other religions as much as this one does? could you go to an Islamic country and speak out against the government or religion as ANYONE can here? can you dress and speak any way you want in those countries, even if you are only visiting that country? can you then expect that country to assimilate to YOUR ideas of how it should be run, politically and religiously?
i have known Muslims, and i have heard them speak about how bad this country is, and calling us the 'Great Satan'. so how tolerant are they of others, in any respect? there is only one answer to this whole worldly mess, and that is to trust in the ONE TRUE GOD Who created it all, and therefore it ALL belongs to Him.

No, no others news stations

No, no others news stations are not and can not be as slanted. You should first look at the assets of News Corps before misspeaking again. no other media outlet comes anywhere near the market share.

Re: bigots? racists?

Do you realize that Muslims pray to the same god Christians pray to?
That they Both pray to the god of Abraham?

This isn't good news

I worked in media for years, received checks from most of these networks at one time or another. To me MSNBC are just the ugliest liars in the business. How a Maddow can be employed by the makers of nuke detonators and fighter-guts and work simultaneously to elect Darth Bama always eluded me. CNN makes up controversies. They take a quote out of context from an interview they do and pick a fight, saying "so and so is speaking out...." or "so and so complained that........" after tricking a source into it with a loaded question, they use everywhere in their product for a whole cycle...... CBS, well you see what Couric did to Palin in the editing room. ABC is just plain snotty and shouldn't be allowed to do news. I always perceived Fox as having the best footage, the most reporters in the field and oddly what appears to me, the viewer, as the most likely to let a source say whatever and let the chips fall. Anyone watching the "NO BIAS NO BULL' stuff on the GZ Mosque would just have their eyes spinning in their heads it's so blatantly dishonest and studid. To me that's why they have 10% of OReilly's numbers.
So.......this arab owning 5% is very very disturbing. Gulianni gave this scumbag's dough back and talked about it on CNN the other day, I didn't see him on Fox which now is not surprising. This is very very bad. I remember hearing about this and not internalizing it is the same pathetic prince......saudi prince, what an oxymoron those lowlife feces scum, how can an arab be royalty of anything but sand or feces? Suffice it to say I'm outraged and want Uncle Rupert to buy back Newscorp.

Saudi Fox ownership

"Suffice it to say I'm outraged and want Uncle Rupert to buy back Newscorp."

Oh, come on. He's only suppressed a couple of stories, as far as we know. Fox does dozens of stories every day. It's no big deal.

Tater

hope my post makes it

i wrote a long thoughtful post, somehow have the feeling it won't make it. bottom line, this is not a good development, but the other nets all have some bad stuff too

"controlling stake"

For the sake of accuracy, it should be noted that the article above is a bit off when it says that the Saudi prince now has a "controlling" stake. He has 7%. While that, along with the other financial relationships between his business and Murdoch may be enough to give him some leverage over Fox News' editorial decisions, this is not legally a controlling stake.

This distinction explains why it is legal for him to hold this stake without violating the rules on foreign ownership of US media which someone brought up in an earlier comment. Those laws don't prohibit small stakes, but they do prohibit foreigners from taking larger stakes (I can't remember the percentage cutoff, but its somewhere around 30-40%, at which point it is possible, depending on the structure of the rest of the ownership, for the foreigner to have a type of controlling legal interest).

That said, one might question whether we should re-examine this threshold in light of the fact that it would seem that even a relatively small minority shareholding, combined with other financial relationships, might be enough for the Prince to exert some level of editorial influence over Fox.

Maybe we need a system where any significant foreign investment in US media should be subject to review and approval, like with other transactions that need to be cleared by CFIUS. (I should note here that I have no idea how CFIUS works or whether they would currently have jurisdiction to review the purchase of a 7% stake in a US media company. They might; I'm not sure)

@ the angry ex-journalist....

Your second comment which tried to give some sort of praise to your first comment was quite amusing. Your journalistic fortitude shines in your posts, I must say. Media needs ratings to survive, correct? Wouldn't you say they all use near the same tactics, just with a different spin? And I believe the article you are commenting on was lost in your rhetoric about CNN and MSNBC.

The pro-radical Muslim Saudi that bought into News Corp can now apparently force changes in what they show on the whim of a phone call. It makes me smile to think that your daily routine must involve several hours of your day spent wasting over FoxNews only to find out you very well might be supporting a radical Muslim who blamed America for 9-11. So, go pump your fist at Glen Beck and keep supporting the "sand and feces" that you mentioned. (You did notice that he has been a major shareholder since 2005 right?)

Please keep your tea-party mentality to yourself, (I use the word "tea-party" synonymously with "lobotomy") and try not to come out of Sarah Palin's camp until you can come up with something that actually deals with the article you obviously skimmed. I would suggest restricting yourself to sites that have wealthy people giving you sound bites to tell you how to think. Thinking for yourself was obviously too much of a chore for you.

It's interesting that

It's interesting that FoxNews despite being now partially owned by a Saudi still has guts to use words "terrorist, muslim and Islam" when so many other networks are drowning in their apparent political correctness with "enemy combatants" and "overseas contingency operations". When did you hear CNN or MSNBC last time use term "Muslim terrorist" for those who in name of Allah blow up market places full of innocent civilians (often Muslims themselves)?

The amount of hate and vile in these posts coming from left is staggering. You guys are way scarier and more dangerous for this country then any Saudi prince trying to change FoxNews headline from Muslim to Civilian.

fox news

By their own standard, Fox News is a sponsor of terrorism. The network urged viewers to "follow the money trail" on the mosque story. It lead to the Kingdom Foundation, and the revelation that the Saudi Prince has a 7% share in Fox News. Prince al-Waleed bin Talal, the 2nd largest stakeholder of Fox behind Murdoch, is a known terrorist sympathizer, and blamed 9/11 on America.
When you watch Fox News, you are making this Saudi Prince rich(er). He earns money from Fox, which then trickles down to terrorist organizations.
So turn the network off, and don't contribute to the scam, and send this link to everyone you know. How, in good conscience, could any patriotic American watch this network? Why isn't the main steam media following this story?

capitalism can be a bitch some times

With companies that are publically traded in a capitalisttic society anyone can buy shares of it so while fox news may be partially owned by a saudi prince who quite frankly is shady to say the least doesn't mean the entire company is bad. Once this gets out to the vast majority im sure the fox news teams will check up on Al Waleed and expose him and possibly have murdoch buy him out.

Beck

True, Beck can have his antics. BUT....he always says "don't believe me...check it out for yourself". He offers evidence of everything he says....and I do not trust ANYONE, so I do my own research. I was told by a friend this evening about the Saudi Prince....so, doing my own research, found this article. 7% hardly constitutes "control".......but must admit it was still a shocker.
Fox reports both sides....very unlike the left wing networks, and so I will stay with Fox.

This is a bunch of lies. No

This is a bunch of lies. No proof of these claims is offered.
