Defending America, Attacking McCain

The Democratic Party [1]-oriented Campaign to Defend America [2], a non-profit group spun off from Americans Against Escalation in Iraq [3], is behind a TV ad [4] attacking John McCain [5]. Campaign to Defend America and its funders "have pledged a multimillion-dollar effort to target McCain and congressional Republicans on the consequences of the Iraq war [6] on the U.S. economy," receiving "at least $1.4 million from The Fund for America [7], a nonprofit group set up last year by John Podesta [8], a former chief of staff for President Clinton [9]; Anna Burger [10], the secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union [11]; and Rob McKay [12], a California philanthropist (and chair of the Democracy Alliance [13]). Campaign to Defend America [14] is headed by Tom Matzzie [15], the former Washington director of ... MoveOn.org [16]. Among Fund for America donors are multimillionaire financier George Soros [17]." The Center for Investigative Reporting [18] has created a chart [19] illustrating the liberal money and connections behind the Campaign to Defend America. Recently the groups behind the Campaign and AAEI poured $20 million dollars [20] into a the Iraq/Recession Campaign [21] targeting Republicans [22] in 2008.
