Brits Propose Law to Shut Up Protesters

Source: The Independent (UK), May 19, 2002 The Independent of England has obtained a copy of a secret internal memorandum circulating in the UK's Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which proposes an "urgent" change in the law by November to crack down on objections to the genetically modified crops. The document urges the Government to "proceed rapidly" to change the law, noting that the plans 'will be criticized because it will seem we are trying to silence GM objections.'" Similar proposals have arisen in the past to stop the public from challenging the need for nuclear waste dumps and other controversial projects at public inquiries.
