This article brings up two issues, in my opinion. The first is that I am quite uncomfortable with the fact that a democratically elected government was overthrown. Yes, Thaksin was corrupt, so I am ambivalent about the coup. I also question the King's role in the government, but you cannot question anything about the royal family while there.

The second issue is one of patents. The patent system is medieval (sp?) guild protectionist system. It is not necessarily the best, most efficient way to promote research and development. And, when the drug companies hide behind these protectionist measures to assure high profits while many of the world's poor die, I'll side with the government of Thailand.

...must be a real self-licking corn dog.

In fact, the video is so patronizing and condescending, I'll bet Wal-Mart is consciously and with malice aforethought saying just this:

Okay, folks, now that there's nobody here but just us chickens, we all know -- we know it, you know it -- that you're much more desperate to hang onto this shit-eating job than to any amount of self-respect it's costing you to sit there and watch this insulting video through to the end. And we all know -- we know it, you know it -- we're gonna dump you anyway when we decide you've reached your sell-by date. But until then, just get out there and don't even look like you might even be thinking the word union. Thank you and have a nice day." :-)

I didn't realize that ANYONE thought nuclear power would fix global warming. We don't need some sort of industrial "fix" for pollution, we need real cultural change to where people would choose to use renewable energy over polluting energy all the time. For instance, solar panels installed on your roof can currently make you a decent amount of money but people don't install them because of the initial investment and, to my disgust, because they "look bad". When people stop caring about how bad their house that won't exist in 50 years because the environment destroys it we might have a real solution. More people buying into this idea means that they don't have to pay as much to do so and it becomes the better option all around.

I admittedly don't know anything about Bruce Harrison but if he has a history of being a spin doctor then I don't see any reason whatsoever to buy what he's saying. I think I'll accept this idea when there is tangible evidence that things have actually changed.

This actually made me laugh, particularly the comment about the cultural implication of what we say on the Middle East. Yes, Iraqis have access to American journalism and when we say things like "fighting the terrorists in Iraq so that they don't come here" it makes us look like giant assholes. Congratulations to the administration on a very minor step forward.
